Decals in 1:48 for a pair of desert Liberators of the D version, serial numbers 42-40082 and 41-11921, service in Libya in 1942 and 1943.
Responsibility details are not available.
The markings on this sheet belong to two Liberators of the D version which in 1942 and 1943 flew from the Libyan plains. The machine 42-40082 carried the name of a fairy tale prince, the aircraft 41-11921 a pair of names, one of which referred to a dwarf and the other to the northern star. Both machines served with the same bombardment squadron and their names fit the joke the unit kept up across its whole strength of aircraft.
The conditions the crews worked in were among the hardest of the whole war. Sand got into the engines and into the machine guns, the daytime heat made the fuselage too hot to touch, and the takeoff areas had to be leveled after every windy day. That harsh operation is exactly what makes desert Liberators a rewarding modeling subject: the paint was chipped, the national insignia faded and the leading edges of the wings scoured by flying dust.
A modeler also gets a rewarding chance to build a machine with the engine cowlings open, because in desert photographs mechanics appear at the cylinders almost constantly.
On the large areas of the fuselage it pays to work in stages. First settle the national insignia, after they have dried the lettering, and finally the artwork from the nose, so that room is left for adjusting the position. The painted motifs run across riveting, so a drop of decal softener is called for and the film should be left to settle without the intervention of fingers, undisturbed for at least forty-five minutes. A crack that appears in spite of that is repaired with a fine brush and paint of the matching shade. The sheet is supplied on its own, with no plastic parts and no paints.
