About product

Markings of the Do-17Z-2 in Luftwaffe service, masks in 1:48 scale

While the national crosses are covered by a separate set, this one is focused on the other markings of the machine. The principle stays the same: a self-adhesive template is laid on a finished coat of varnish, paint is sprayed through the cut-out and once it is removed a sharp insignia is left without carrier film. Sprayed markings also do not stand out anywhere, so you can go on working on them, sanding and weathering. This set from MH models is cut for a particular Do-17Z-2 kit in 1:48 scale. The exact list of insignia on the sheet is stated on the box. The cut of the masks is based on the ICM kit.

The real subject

The Dornier Do 17 was a German twin-engine bomber of slim construction, known by the nickname flying pencil. The Z series forms the close of its development and is told from the earlier versions by the deepened glazed nose into which the whole crew fitted. The Z-2 version served as the basic bomber form of this series and was the most numerous of all the Do 17Z variants.

What to watch out for

Small insignia such as letters and numerals are the most sensitive to paint running underneath. Press the mask down really around the whole perimeter of every cut-out, therefore, ideally with a blunt wooden stick, and spray perpendicularly in very thin coats. Let the paint set between coats. Take the template off while the paint is flexible, because on dry paint the edge chips easily. If you are matting the model, do it only after the mask has been removed.

Who the set suits

  • builders of twin-engine bombers of the Second World War
  • modelers who want sharp markings without a decal rim
  • as a companion to the set with the national crosses for the same type
  • builds with pronounced wear of the finish

This is a modeling accessory, not an aircraft kit. The model and the paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

The name speaks of the markings, and the crosses are covered by a separate set from the same manufacturer for the same type. The exact contents of the sheet are stated on the box.

No, these are masking templates. The Do-17Z-2 kit has to be bought separately.

What decides is pressing the mask down around the perimeter of the cut-out and spraying in thin coats perpendicular to the surface. A heavy coat in one go drives the paint under the edge.

Not with the usual procedure. The varnish must be cured before the mask is applied, and take the mask off slowly at an acute angle.
