About product

1:48 F-51D Mustang — 3D decals for the cockpit (Red Fox Studio)

An accessory for modelers who want legible instruments and seat belts in the cockpit of a Mustang in 1:48 scale instead of smooth plastic. The panels are printed on decal paper with a layered structure, so once applied the gauges and switches have real depth. The set is applied as a decal and holds no plastic or resin part. The accessory is fitted to the Tamiya kit; that is not in the package.

What makes this cockpit special

The designation F-51D refers to the postwar version of the Mustang, that is to a machine that flew only after the change in the designation system and was used above all for attacks on ground targets. The airframe stayed practically the same as on the wartime P-51D, but the cockpit moved on: newer radio and navigation equipment was added and the lettering and the placement of some controls on the side consoles changed. For the modeler that means a panel from the wartime version does not belong here exactly. The rest stays typically Mustang — round analog gauges, the left console with the throttle, the right console with the radio controls and a seat with belts that in plastic are usually only suggested.

How the set is applied

Paint the base first and let it dry completely. Cut the part out as closely as possible, soak it in lukewarm water and position it with a brush. Use decal softener sparingly, by drops — a layered print can wrinkle if an aggressive product is overdone. We recommend sanding the original engraving on the plastic panel away so that the decal seats over its whole area.

Who the set is for

  • For builders of postwar and Korean War Mustangs
  • For modelers who do not want to hand paint individual gauges
  • For those building with the canopy open
  • For modelers looking for an alternative to a photo-etched cockpit

The accessory is supplied without a kit, paints or glue. Check before ordering that it matches your particular kit.

FAQ

The designation F-51D belongs to the postwar version, which had newer radio and navigation equipment and differently lettered controls. A panel from the wartime version therefore does not match.

A sharp knife or scissors, a dish of lukewarm water, a soft brush and a decal softener are enough. Nothing is glued and nothing is sanded.

Yes, seat belts are part of this type of set. In plastic they tend to be suggested only by engraving, which looks flat once painted.
