The Fieseler Fi 156 was built on a single idea: to take off and touch down where another machine has no chance. High-lift devices along the whole leading and trailing edge, long landing gear legs with a lot of travel and a low wing loading made it a flying observation post, a courier and an ambulance. The C version was the most widespread and carried a movable machine gun in the rear.
No other machine of the period has such a proportion of glazed area. The glazing starts above the engine, continues across the roof and bulges outwards at the sides so that the crew could see vertically down past the wheels. Inside, two seats one behind the other are visible, dual controls, the tubular frame of the fuselage and the covering of the side panels. Practically the whole interior is legible from outside.
On a fighter the reverse of the frame shows in a narrow strip; on the Storch it forms a network across the whole side. The bulged windows also refract the light and reveal even what would stay hidden on a flat pane. Spraying this grid by hand from inside is a whole evening's work and an uneven edge is all that is left of it anyway. Die-cut masks for both sides cut that work to a fraction and keep the edge straight along its whole length.
It is also worth noticing that the interior of the Storch was in no way ornate. The frames carried a lighter shade than the structure of the fuselage, the seats were bare and the floor often stayed without covering. The model therefore stands or falls on how cleanly that light network separates from the darker surfaces beneath it, because there is no other prominent detail in the crew space.
