This set from Brengun holds photo-etched metal parts for a model of the German Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-5 fighter in 1:48 scale and is cut for one particular kit, the Eduard one. It is an accessory to a kit, not an airplane model. The base model has to be obtained separately.
Compared with injected plastic, etched sheet has one advantage, but a fundamental one: thickness. Parts that are made of thin sheet metal or wire on the real aircraft come out several times thicker in plastic even with the best molding, because a mold cannot go below a certain limit. Photo-etched metal evens that mismatch out. On a model it shows most on the parts seen from the side and against the light: the edges of covers, grilles, brackets and flat raised features. Photo-etched parts also suit places where a kit only suggests a detail with an engraved line.
Cut the parts out of the fret with a sharp scalpel against a hard surface; never break them out. Sand the remains of the cuts with a fine file. Make the bends exactly along the marked score lines, best in a photo-etch bending tool or between two blades. When a bend is sharp, anneal the sheet briefly over a flame and let it cool, which softens the metal so that it does not crack. Before gluing it is essential to degrease the photo-etched parts with alcohol or acetone, otherwise neither primer nor super glue will hold. Apply the glue in a minimal amount on the tip of a wire. Where a photo-etched part is to replace a plastic one, cut the original feature off and sand the area smooth. Paint only over a primer intended for metal.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
