Die-cut masks in 1:48 scale for the cockpit glazing of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighter in the A-5 version. They cover the glass from outside and from inside and are complemented by one set of national insignia masks.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 arrived as a counterweight to slender inline fighters: a radial BMW 801, a short stocky nose and widely splayed landing gear that forgave a rougher landing on field surfaces. The A-5 version is told from the older A-4 by one specific intervention in the structure. The engine mount moved fifteen centimeters forward, so that the thermal load in the cockpit would drop and so that the center of gravity, which kept shifting rearward with ever-increasing armament and armor, would be balanced out. The bulged sliding canopy was not jettisoned by hand in an emergency; an explosive charge released it.
Vinyl is elastic and therein lies the whole trap. It takes only a slight pull on one corner while carrying it and the piece stretches by tenths of a millimeter, which in 1:48 means that one edge of the frame stays bare and the opposite one gets overlapped. The film is therefore laid down so that it seats in the middle and is rolled out from the middle toward the edges with a thumb or a stick. It is never tensioned over a convex edge; when the shape does not fit, it is better to lift the mask and lay it down again.
Spraying tolerates thin coats too, because the mask does not have the thickness of tape and so the edge of the paint forms no step that would then need sanding down. On a model this shows mainly on the thin bars of the frame, where any raised line would be visible against the light.
