A decal sheet for the Hawker Typhoon IB with three marking variants of British squadrons of 1943.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Hawker Typhoon entered service as an interceptor and it was as an interceptor that it made its name. The Napier Sabre engine gave it a speed close to the ground that German machines could answer only with difficulty. The year 1943 found the type at a time when it already had the worst of its engine troubles behind it and was beginning to move toward attacks on ground targets.
The following three machines are printed on the sheet:
The squadrons in the six hundred series were originally volunteer units, and No. 609 Squadron was among those that achieved the best results on Typhoons against low-flying German fighters over southern England.
Commanders' machines differed from the other aircraft of a unit more often than one might expect. Besides the usual letters they tended to carry small personal additions, which appear in period photographs only from one angle, and the sheet prints them in a form that can be documented. Anyone building several aircraft of the same squadron will value the fact that the code letters have the same height and the same stroke thickness.
On the work: the quick-recognition stripes on the underside of the wing call for careful settling, because they follow the leading edge. It pays to apply them in sections and to keep checking the symmetry of the two halves. Neither the kit nor varnish is in the package.
