This plastic kit from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi captures the Mitsubishi T-2 aircraft in the elegant white and blue finish of the Blue Impulse display team, the representative team of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. The model in 1:48 scale is one of the most attractive forms of this type and a rewarding piece for the display case.
The Mitsubishi T-2, the first supersonic aircraft developed in Japan, served from the middle of the 1970s for the advanced training of JASDF pilots. In the 1980s the two-seat T-2 was also taken over by the Blue Impulse display team as its second type after the F-86 Sabre, and the team flew them at air shows all over Japan until the middle of the 1990s, when Kawasaki T-4 machines replaced them. The white machines with blue accents became a symbol of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force of their era.
With a display team finish a smooth glossy surface is the key — use a light primer before spraying the white and lay the paint on in several thin coats. Handle the blue lines with a combination of masking and decals, which lie down better on a gloss base. Fill and sand the seams carefully; on a white surface every flaw shows. A final gloss clear coat will unify the paint with the decals.
