An Eduard photo-etched metal set for a model of the Lockheed F-104DJ Starfighter in 1:48 scale. It adds detail to the model that a plastic part is too thick for.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is an American supersonic aircraft that is told from its contemporaries at a glance: it has a slim fuselage, a T-tail and an extremely short, thin wing with a leading edge so sharp that it was covered on the ground for the safety of the ground crew. The F-104DJ designation belongs to the two-seat trainer version delivered to the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.
Photo-etch is a thin metal sheet with the detail etched into it, from which the individual parts are cut. Metal holds its shape even where plastic would have to stay many times thicker than the real thing, so the model gains a crispness that cannot be achieved with a plastic part. Exactly what the fret contains and where each part belongs is shown in the manufacturer's instructions.
Put a hard surface under the fret and cut the parts off with a sharp blade; breaking them out with your fingers twists the thin metal and straightening it again is difficult. Make the bends over the edge of a bending tool or between two blades, so that the edge is sharp along its whole length. Apply the glue in a tiny amount on the tip of a toothpick, otherwise it runs over and floods the detail. Before painting, wash and degrease the metal and undercoat it with a primer, because on a smooth surface the paint otherwise rubs off.
A photo-etched set is supplied. The kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
