About product

1:48 Marder III road wheel masks (for the Tamiya kits)

The set belongs among the accessories for painting, not among the kits. It covers the road wheels of the vehicle for as long as you spray the base shade, so the tire bands stay in a different color with a sharp edge. A tie to a particular kit is essential with masks; this one is listed for the Tamiya kits.

What makes the running gear of this subject special

The Marder III builds on the chassis of a light tank of Czechoslovak design, and that has its running gear laid out differently from most German vehicles. There are only four road wheels on each side, but of large diameter, sprung in pairs on leaf springs. The drive sprocket is at the front, the idler wheel at the rear, and a pair of return rollers runs above the wheels. The wheels do not overlap one another, so masking is more straightforward than with an interleaved arrangement, but every wheel is all the more visible for it. Above its unchanged chassis the vehicle has a tall open superstructure with a gun, so the silhouette is tall and the running gear stays entirely exposed beneath it. A badly painted tire band cannot be hidden behind a fender or side armor on this subject.

Work plan before painting

First compare the set with the wheels on the sprue and check that the shape matches the parts you have in hand. Then wash the wheels in lukewarm water with dish soap and let them dry out properly, so no grease or release agent residue from the mold is left on the surface. A thin coat of primer evens out the absorbency and a mask holds on it far better than on smooth plastic. Think the order of assembly through in advance: on a vehicle with an open superstructure it is sensible to have the chassis and wheels painted and unmasked before you start on the fighting compartment and the gun, because after that an airbrush reaches the space between the wheels and the superstructure only with difficulty.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German tank destroyers on a foreign chassis in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who do not get on with painting tire bands with a brush
  • Those who want a clean color transition on an exposed running gear
  • Beginners learning to work with masks on small parts

The package contains masks only. The kit, paints and glue are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The masks copy the shape of the parts. Wheels differ between manufacturers in diameter and detail, so a mask cut for a Tamiya kit will not fit elsewhere.

The chassis has four road wheels on each side.

Yes, but always press the edge of the mask down and spray square to the surface. A slanting spray at higher pressure increases the risk of bleeding.

Definitely. Grease from your fingers and release agent residue from the mold both make a mask hold worse, and the paint then gets under the edge.
