A set of pre-cut self-adhesive masks intended for spraying the national markings on a model of the Bf 109 G-6 fighter in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit and not decals: the masks define the shape of the insignia and the paint is applied directly onto the surface of the model. The set is an accessory that replaces part of a decal sheet.
A decal is always a thin layer of film laid on the surface. Even when applied well onto a gloss base, a visible film can remain at the edges or silvering, that is, tiny air bubbles, can appear under it. Sprayed markings do not have this problem at all, because they are part of the paint layer. They also stand up without risk to paint wear, sanding back or a wash. The drawback is the effort involved and the need for precise registration with multicolor insignia.
The Bf 109 G-6 was the most numerously produced variant of the German Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter. It was powered by the DB 605 engine and is distinguished from the older machines at first sight by the characteristic covers over the breeches of the onboard guns on the engine cowling. The version appeared in 1943 and became the basis for a range of further modifications and subvariants.
Spray the base under the insignia smoothly and let it harden properly. Press the mask down all around the edge; with multicolor insignia work in layers from light to dark and let the paint dry in between. Spray light coats perpendicular to the surface so that paint does not creep under the edge. Take the mask off shortly after spraying, while the paint is dry only to the touch.
The package contains masking material only. The model, paints and decals are not part of it. The masks are cut for a particular kit of the given type, so check that they match your model.
