1:48 J-16 mask set in the BASIC step (New Ware)

This is a set of self-adhesive masks in 1:48 scale intended for the model of the Chinese multi-purpose airplane J-16. The masks are cut to the shape of the individual parts of the glazing and of further areas, so all you have to do is take them off the sheet, transfer them onto the model and spray. The set is cut for a particular Hobby Boss kit, so the shapes fit its glazing with no further adjusting. In itself it holds no plastic or photo-etched parts.

What the BASIC step means

New Ware distinguishes its mask sets by extent. BASIC is the basic version, which deals with the most important thing, the one a modeler struggles with most, that is the main cockpit glazing. The extended steps of the same series cover a greater number of areas and small details. If what you mainly want is a cleanly masked canopy and you do not need an extent you will not use, BASIC is the logical choice.

Why a mask instead of tape

• A crisp sprayed edge with no paint running under it.
• Lengthy cutting of tape with a knife directly on the model, where a clear part risks being scratched, is done away with.
• The frames come out of the same width all the way round, which with masking by hand usually does not happen.
• Curved glazing is masked more easily, because the mask is shaped in advance.

How to work with the masks

• Degrease the clear part before applying the mask and let it dry completely.
• Carry the mask with pointed tweezers or a toothpick and do not touch the adhesive layer with your fingers.
• Press the edges down properly with a toothpick, above all where the mask follows a curve.
• Spray in several thin coats, as a heavy coat of paint forms a ridge at the edge.
• Take the mask off while the paint has only set, not after it has cured completely.
