QMT 1:48 Phantom FG.1 and FGR.2 – wheel bay masks is a set of self-adhesive masks for painting the wheel bays of the British Phantoms in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
Die-cut self-adhesive masks for painting the wheel bays of McDonnell Douglas Phantom machines in the British FG.1 and FGR.2 versions in 1:48 scale. It is not a model or a spare part but an aid to painting: the mask separates the light shade of the inside of the bay from the outer finish. The number of masks and the extent of the coverage are stated on the manufacturer's packaging.
On jet machines the contrast between the wheel bay and the outside is usually pronounced, because the bays and the inner sides of the doors tend to be in a considerably lighter shade than the surrounding finish. A transition like that reveals every inaccuracy. In 1:48 scale the shapes of the bays are also small and broken up, so finishing by hand with a brush means a thick line across half the width of the rim. A die-cut mask handles this work in a single pass and is above all repeatable, which comes in useful if you are building several machines in one batch. Check the specific shade of the inside of the bay against the scheme you are building, because it differed from machine to machine and from period to period.
Deal with the inside of the bay first and let the paint cure. Seat the mask with tweezers, run a blunt tip along the edge and spray perpendicular in thin coats. Leave the gear doors and the legs separate until the painting is finished. If you plan a wash in the bay to bring out the piping and the wiring, do it only after the mask is off and the covering finish is dry.
The package contains masks only. The kit, the paints and the glue are not included in the delivery.
