About product

A masking set for the canopy glazing of the Mi-24V and Mi-24VP, 1:48 scale

This is not a kit nor a decal sheet but a set of pre-cut masking templates from the New Ware brand. The masks are cut from kabuki paper, that is from thin Japanese paper with a weak adhesive that holds on a smooth surface but leaves no residue behind when it is lifted and does not pull the paint off. The set comes in the basic variant, which with masking sets usually means a smaller scope than with the extended versions.

Why a mask instead of hand work

The canopy glazing of the Mi-24 consists of several separate surfaces with straight as well as broken edges and with prominent framing. Masking such a shape by hand with tape means dozens of scalpel cuts right on the part, and every movement of the blade across clear plastic risks a scratch you will never hide again. A pre-cut mask removes that stage: you transfer the template from its backing, press it onto the glass and the boundary of the paint arises exactly where it should. The result is a sharp transition between the frame and the glass along the whole length of the glazing.

Usage tips

First degrease the glazing and dry it so that the mask holds, because grease from fingers is the most common cause of paint creeping under. Lift the mask off the sheet with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel and lay it down from one end so that it does not fold over. Once it is stuck down, press the edges with a toothpick or a wooden stick, above all where the glass runs into a curve, because that is exactly where the paint most often creeps under. Apply the paint with an airbrush in thin coats and preferably in two goes, because a heavy coat lifts the edge of the mask. Let the paint dry before lifting the masks, but not cure fully, and pull the mask away slowly at a sharp angle back over itself rather than straight up.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Mi-24V or Mi-24VP in 1:48 scale.
  • Modelers who do not want to cut tape with a scalpel right on the glazing.
  • Anyone interested in a sharp transition of paint on the cabin frames.
  • Those who paint with an airbrush and want to save time in preparation.

The set contains masking templates. Paints, glue and the base kit are not included in the package. It is not a helicopter model, because the masks require a corresponding kit in 1:48 scale.

FAQ

A thin Japanese paper with a weak adhesive. It follows curves well, leaves no adhesive residue behind and does not pull dried paint off.

With masking sets it usually distinguishes a smaller scope from the extended versions. The breakdown of the masks is given on the packaging of the set.

When the paint has dried but is not yet fully cured. Pull them away slowly at a sharp angle back over themselves, not at right angles to the surface.

Degrease the glass, press the edges of the mask down carefully with a toothpick and spray thin coats. A heavy coat of paint lifts the edge of the mask.
