The Mitsubishi A6M was a Japanese carrier-based fighter, and the nickname Zero comes from its Japanese type designation. The A6M2 version is one of the early production variants, the ones with which the aircraft went into the fighting in the Pacific. An air-cooled radial engine, a very low weight and a large wing area gave it an agility and a range to which its opponents had no answer at first. It paid for that with weak protection for the pilot and the tanks, which showed as soon as tougher and faster machines came up against it.
A model of the A6M2 in 1:48 scale. The parts are supplied unassembled and unpainted. In this scale the span of the finished model comes out at about twenty-five centimeters, a size where the cockpit fittings can still be made out while the model still fits in an ordinary display case. The number of parts, the versions offered and the recommended building sequence are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
Finish and paint the cockpit before you glue the fuselage halves together; after that you cannot get inside. Try the wing dihedral and the fit of the engine cowling dry. The surface of the aircraft was smooth, so fill and sand the joints carefully and restore any lines lost to the sanding with a scriber guided along a straightedge. Mask the framed canopy strip by strip or with a ready-made mask, as the prominent framing is a conspicuous feature of this aircraft. Even out the surface with a gloss clear coat before applying the decals.
Paints, glue, filler and tools are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
