About product

The real subject

The Mitsubishi A6M was a carrier-based fighter of the Imperial Japanese Navy, and among the Allies the name Zero became established for it. The A6M2 variant is one of the early production versions with which the aircraft entered the war in the Pacific. It was powered by an air-cooled radial engine, and the designers staked everything on low weight: the aircraft therefore excelled in agility in slow turning combat and in a range that no fighter of the day could match. The price was practically no protection at all for the pilot or the fuel tanks, which showed as soon as heavier and faster machines came up against it.

What the kit offers

A plastic kit of the A6M2 in 1:48 scale. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The twelve-meter span of the real aircraft works out to a finished model with a span of about twenty-five centimeters, a size in which the cockpit fittings can still be made out while the model still fits in an ordinary display case. The number of parts, the color schemes offered and the recommended sequence are given in the manufacturer's instructions.

Building and painting tips

Finish and paint the cockpit before you join the fuselage halves; after that you cannot get inside. Try the fit of the engine cowling and the wing dihedral dry, as these are the two places where even a small deviation shows. The framed canopy is a conspicuous feature of this aircraft, so it pays to mask it carefully, strip by strip or with a ready-made mask, and to fit it only once the paintwork is done. Even out the surface with a gloss clear coat before the decals, and only then pick out the recesses.

Who it is for

For modelers of Second World War fighters who build in 1:48 scale and want to add the Japanese side of the Pacific conflict to their collection.

Paints, glue, filler and tools are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
