About product

Brengun 1:48 MQ-8C Fire-X: a limited-run kit

A kit of the unmanned helicopter MQ-8C Fire-X in 1:48 scale. It comes from a limited-run range that the manufacturer builds on cast parts complemented by etch, so in its demands and in the way it is worked it differs from an ordinary injection-molded kit. Please check the exact composition of the particular package with the manufacturer; it cannot be deduced from the name.

The real subject

The Fire-X came about as a demonstrator of an unmanned helicopter built on the airframe of a light civil machine of the Bell 407 category, that is, a single-engine helicopter with a conventional arrangement of main and tail rotor. The aim was to replace the pilot with a control system and obtain a platform with substantially greater endurance and payload than the smaller unmanned helicopters of the previous generation had. From this line of development came the type introduced under the designation MQ-8C. For a modeler it is interesting in that it is the well-known shape of a civil helicopter without a cockpit, fitted with military equipment.

Building and painting tips

First wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water, so that the mold release disappears from the surface. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw or a cutting disc, not with nippers. Sand wet and with respiratory protection. Cast and photo-etched parts are glued with cyanoacrylate or epoxy; cement for polystyrene does not work here. Spray the whole model with primer, as paint holds badly on a smooth surface without a base. Assemble the tail boom and the rotor blades while checking the geometry, ideally against a ruler, so that the rotor does not sit crooked.

Who the kit is for

  • For more experienced modelers used to cast and photo-etched parts
  • For collectors of unmanned systems and modern helicopter equipment
  • For builders looking for a type outside the usual range of the large manufacturers
  • It is not suitable as a first kit or for child modelers

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Not in the usual sense. The product comes from a limited-run range built on cast parts; we recommend checking the exact composition of the package with the manufacturer.

Cyanoacrylate or epoxy. Ordinary cement for polystyrene will join neither cast nor photo-etched parts.

We do not recommend it. Cutting off casting blocks, wet sanding and gluing with cyanoacrylate assume practice from earlier models.

An unmanned helicopter built on the airframe of a light single-engine civil machine. It came about as a demonstrator and stood at the beginning of the development of the type introduced as the MQ-8C.
