This plastic kit from the Italian manufacturer Italeri captures the North American Fury carrier fighter in 1:48 scale. The FJ-2/3 designation in the name suggests that the box covers both related versions; which parts are used for which of them is governed by the instructions, which also state the contents of the decal sheet and the optional parts. The 1:48 scale is a good choice for this type: the model is large enough for a detailed cockpit and still fits into an ordinary display case.
The North American Fury was a family of carrier fighters of the US Navy and the Marine Corps, derived from the same maker's swept-wing land-based fighter. The FJ-2 version was created by adapting it for operation from aircraft carriers: it received strengthened landing gear, an arrestor hook, a folding wing and heavier armament. The FJ-3 version had a different powerplant with more thrust and improved characteristics on take-off from the deck. The swept wing and the characteristic circular air intake in the nose remained on both configurations.
The intake duct running through the nose deserves attention: fill and sand the joint inside the duct before you close up the fuselage, because afterwards you will not get inside. Finish and paint the cockpit and the seat in advance. Carrier aircraft wore glossy naval finishes, so the surface has to be smooth: sand the joints carefully and use a gloss coat before the decals. Consider whether to build the model with the wing folded or spread, as this has to be decided before gluing. Finally, unify the sheen according to how worn a machine you want to show.
