About product

Montex 1:48 P-40F - a masking set

Pre-cut self-adhesive painting masks for a model of the fighter Curtiss P-40F in 1:48 scale. The package contains no plastic parts - it is an accessory to a kit you have already bought, which takes care of painting the transparent parts. The templates are cut for the glazing of the AMT kit.

The real subject

The P-40F belongs to the family of American single-seat Curtiss fighters. It differs from the other renderings in its power unit: instead of an Allison engine it was given a license-built Packard with an engine derived from the Rolls-Royce Merlin, which showed on the outside in the deletion of the characteristic intake above the engine cowling. The aircraft found a use above all in the Mediterranean and North African area, where its durable structure and its usability from field airfields were valued. The cabin consisted of a framed windshield and a sliding canopy.

Usage and painting tips

On aircraft of this period the frames of the cabin are painted differently on the inside than on the outside, and it is exactly that which tells a well built model. Proceed therefore in two steps: once the masks are stuck on, spray the interior shade first, let it dry and only then apply the external camouflage color. If you glue the canopy on only after the spraying, you can paint the inner side before assembly. Use very thin paint and low pressure - a thick coat builds up under the edge of the mask and a visible ridge is left once it is removed. Degrease the glazing before sticking the masks on and let it dry naturally.

Who the set is for

  • builders of American fighters of the Second World War in 1:48 scale
  • modelers who want to set the cabin frames apart in color inside and out
  • those who want to avoid cutting tape into thin strips
  • a build for the display case, where the cabin is one of the first visual elements

The set is an accessory to a plastic kit, which it does not contain. Paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. The set contains painting masks only. The plastic kit has to be bought separately.

On the real aircraft the inner side of the frames had the shade of the cabin interior, while the outer side was covered by the camouflage. A two-phase spray finish captures that difference faithfully.

Press the edges down thoroughly and spray thin paint at low pressure in thin layers at right angles to the surface.

Not reliably. The cut corresponds to the glazing of the AMT kit.
