A 1:48 sheet with two Mustangs of the early version. Both subjects carry a name of their own on the nose and the code letters of a fighter squadron. The plastic model is sold separately.
Responsibility details are not available.
Lettering under the cockpit was not an extravagance but a custom. A pilot was assigned his machine, the mechanics looked after it every day, and a name on the nose turned it into a piece of property of the crew standing by it. Most of those names were funny, some outright tasteless, and more than one referred to home on the other side of the ocean. Both subjects of this sheet have such a name and it is by them that they can be traced in documentation today.
The machines belong to the form of the Mustang with a framed cockpit and a full spine, that is to the appearance that flew from the winter to the summer of 1944 and gradually gave way to the later version. In modeling terms it is interesting in that even a layman recognizes the difference from the usual shape: the silhouette is lower, the rear part of the fuselage continuous and the whole comes across as more slender. Besides the names, the markings include code letters and the national insignia usual with American units in England.
The package holds decals only; a model of the fighter in 1:48 scale and paints do not belong with it. The set serves well for building a pair of machines from one era, on which it can be nicely shown how the decoration differed from machine to machine, even though the type and production version stayed the same.
