Until the winter of 1943 the daylight bomber formations came back without protection, because no Allied fighter reached further than the borders of Germany. The Mustang reversed that equation. With tanks under the wing it managed the journey there and back, and from the spring of 1944 the German fighter forces had to defend themselves over their own territory for the first time. Bomber losses fell and the offensive role shifted to the fighters, which after breaking away from the formation attacked the airfields below them.
Both aircraft carry the same code pair MC, so they belonged to one squadron and differed only in the individual letter. The first has serial number 44-13660 and the letter B, the second the number 44-15198 and the letter L. For a modeler that is a welcome property: two builds with the same finish and the same position of the codes, yet each different.
The machines of this unit flew in bare duralumin with colored bands on the engine cowling. The finish therefore consists of only a thin layer of varnish and every irregularity under a decal is visible. It pays to sand the surface completely smooth, only then to apply the metal shade and finally clear gloss.
First the small lettering, then the code letters and finally the national insignia, so that the larger pieces do not have to be worked around with tweezers. Let the surface dry thoroughly between individual rounds.
For a collector the pair is also interesting in showing the ordinary line work of one squadron rather than famous commanders' examples. It was precisely machines like these that flew most of the escort missions and they appear only rarely in photographs, so a model built from them tends to be rarer at exhibitions than the repeatedly built celebrities.
