A sheet of wet decals for models of the Polikarpov U-2, later designated Po-2, in 1:48 scale. According to the name this is the first part, to which a continuation also exists. The sheet is an accessory for marking an already built model; the kit itself is not included.
The Polikarpov U-2 was a single-engine biplane of mixed construction with a wooden frame and fabric covering, powered by a small radial engine. It came about at the end of the 1920s as a training and liaison machine and became renowned for its exceptionally low landing speed and for being undemanding both on the surface and in maintenance. After the death of its designer in 1944 the type was given the designation Po-2 in his honor. Besides training it served for liaison, ambulance, reconnaissance and night tasks, and after the war it flew for many years yet in civil roles and in licensed production outside the Soviet Union.
Fabric covering with protruding ribs is the hardest part of the model for decals. Film will not adhere to such a surface by itself, so softener is necessary: seat the decal, draw the excess water off and only then apply the solution and let it work without interfering with the motif. Beforehand the base has to be smooth and glossy, because matte clear holds air under the film. A biplane moreover has places between the struts and wires that are hard to reach, so apply the decals before you fit the last of the bracing. On large areas it pays to transfer a decal onto a wet surface and let it slide into position with a brush, not with your fingers.
The decals are an accessory, not a model. A kit, paints, clear coat and softener are not included in the package.
