The set from Armory replaces the main gear wheels on small models of the B-17F/G Flying Fortress bomber. The castings are resin, which allows a sharper tread and sidewall pattern than can be reached on injection-molded plastic in this scale. The key difference against the parts from the kit is the sag: the tire has a flat patch where it touches the runway, so the model does not float above the surface but really stands on it. It is an add-on, not an aircraft kit.
The B-17 Flying Fortress is an American four-engined heavy bomber of the Second World War period. The F and G versions were among the most numerously built and are also the most frequent subject of kits. On a fully loaded machine the gear carried a considerable weight and the tires were visibly compressed on a standing aircraft. This is exactly the detail that tends to be underrated on models, and yet it decides whether the finished replica looks like a photograph of the real machine or like a toy on a stand.
In 1:144 these are small parts, so work over a light surface and use tweezers. Separate the casting from the block with a cut from a fine saw or a sharp knife, never break it off. Check the contact patch against a flat board after cutting and level it with sandpaper if needed, otherwise the model will stand crooked. Wash the parts in warm water with dish soap before painting so that the remains of mold release agent disappear, and let them dry out completely. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, as plastic cement does not hold on resin. For the tire reach for dark gray rather than pure black, and you can paint the hub with a brush around the rim or help yourself with a circular mask. A light dusting of pigment in the color of the ground the model stands on works well at the end. Protect your airways when sanding resin.
This is an add-on to a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The set is supplied unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
