A photo-etched set from the Czech maker Hauler in 1:48 scale for the model of the German Pz.Kpfw. III medium tank in the Ausf. M and Ausf. N versions. The set deals with the Schürzen protective plates and is cut for the Tamiya kit. It is not a model of the tank but an accessory that is fitted to an already built plastic kit.
The Ausf. M and Ausf. N versions belonged to the late batches of the Pz.Kpfw. III. The Ausf. N carried a short 75 mm gun taken over from the Pz.Kpfw. IV and performed support tasks, while the Ausf. M stayed with the 50 mm gun. Both versions were routinely fitted with protective plates on the sides of the hull and around the turret, which were meant to lessen the effect of a hit before it reached the armor proper.
It is precisely on protective plates that it pays most not to make a model too clean. The plates routinely bent, worked loose and fell off in the field, so a machine with several pieces missing is more faithful than a continuous fence without a single flaw. Metal makes that possible: a part can be bent over a pencil, a corner can be twisted, or a whole plate can be left out and only the empty hanger left in place. A primer for metal always belongs under the paint. When setting the plates off from the hull, watch for the same gap along the whole length; an uneven standoff shows more on a finished model than the thickness of the material.
This is an accessory set, not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
