A figure of a pilot of the British Royal Flying Corps of the First World War in 1:48 scale. An accessory to models of airplanes and to display case scenes.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Royal Flying Corps was the air corps of the British army, which during the First World War provided reconnaissance, the direction of artillery fire, bombing and the fight for air superiority. In April 1918 it merged with the Royal Naval Air Service and the independent Royal Air Force came out of it. The abbreviation RFC in the name refers precisely to this corps, so the figure belongs with models of British airplanes from before 1918.
A model of an airplane on its own has nothing to compare its size with and blends in with the others on a shelf. A human figure beside a wing gives the scale that the eye reads at once, and gives a scene action. With the machines of the First World War that holds doubly: the airplanes of the period look small against later equipment, and without a figure beside them that is not apparent.
Wash and degrease the surface before painting, or the paint will not hold on the smooth places. Apply the base layer thinly so that the edges of the folds are not lost. Build the face and hands on a lighter shade, then work a darker glaze into the hollows and lighten the highest places gently; only this difference gives a face depth. If the kit of the figure includes leather items, they take a smoother sheen than cloth.
The figure itself is supplied. The airplane model, paints, glue and a base are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
