A resin set from the Czech maker Hauler for models of the German Sd.Kfz. 250 and Sd.Kfz. 251 series half-track carriers. It deals with the winter modification of the front axle, on which skis were fitted instead of wheels so that the unsprung front wheel would not break through in deep snow. It is an aftermarket accessory for a plastic kit, which the modeler buys separately. The target kit is Tamiya or AFV.
This is not a universal improvement but a change of the vehicle's configuration. Skis on the front axle make sense on a model set in a winter environment, typically in a diorama with snow, or on a display-case model with winter paint. Anyone building the vehicle into a summer scene has no way of using the set. At the same time it is an item a viewer notices at once, because a half-track carrier with skis looks markedly different from the standard form, and a diorama thereby gains a clear setting in time.
Before any work, resin parts are washed in warm water with detergent, so that the release agent from the mold comes off the surface. Without that neither paint nor glue will hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine-toothed saw, not with nippers; resin is brittle and cracks. When sanding, wear a respirator or sand wet; resin dust should not be breathed in. It is bonded exclusively with super glue; cement for plastic has no effect on resin. Apply a primer before painting. With winter paint it works well to spray the vehicle in the base color, let it dry and apply the white thinly and unevenly, so that the base shows through as on a coat applied in the field.
This is a resin accessory set, not a kit of the vehicle. The Tamiya or AFV base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
