An injection-molded plastic kit of the early Sikorsky R-5 / S-51 helicopter in 1:48 scale from AMP. The package holds clear parts for the glazing, a decal sheet and a fine photo-etched sheet for refining the detail. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The Sikorsky R-5 was among the first practically usable helicopters. Against the older R-4 type it gained a larger main rotor diameter and a longer fuselage with tandem seating, two seats one behind the other. Out of the R-5 then came the civilian and military S-51 version with a still larger rotor, a higher payload and reworked landing gear. The machines of this family became famous as rescue helicopters, among other things for picking up downed airmen and evacuating the wounded in the Korean War.
It is an older subject with fine parts, so go carefully. Glue the photo-etched parts with super glue (cyanoacrylate) and the plastic joints with a thin cement for plastic. Give the glazed cockpit your care; the frame of the glazing comes out nicely with masking and an airbrush. Put a primer on before painting; a glossy metal or a bold high-visibility finish is typical of rescue machines, and it can be completed with a fine wash and light weathering.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
