This is an accessory set, not an aircraft model. It replaces the center cone of the engine nacelle inlet on the plastic model of the SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft in 1:48 scale. The resin casting is in one piece, with a more accurate nose profile and a clean surface free of the parting seam that otherwise has to be filled and sanded on the production plastic part. The castings are shaped for the Testors and Italeri kits.
The SR-71 is a twin-engine reconnaissance aircraft with long nacelles on either side, each with a prominent sharp cone at the front. The cone is not decorative: on the real machine it moved along the axis of the inlet according to the speed of flight and so controlled the airflow to the engine. Depending on the regime the cone may therefore be retracted or extended, a detail that enthusiasts of the type look for on a finished model.
Wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and level the mating face on sanding paper laid on a flat board; protect your airways while sanding. Check the fit dry before gluing and make sure the cone sits on the axis of the inlet, otherwise a visually jarring offset will result. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Paint over a primer. Dark matte finishes show every irregularity, so smooth the surface carefully; bringing out the edges lightly and a faint hint of a metallic shade on the leading edge of the cone will give the part depth.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
