About product

Static dischargers for Russian aircraft in 1:48 scale (Aerobonus)

A set of fine modeling accessories from Aerobonus, the accessory range of the Czech firm Aires, intended for finishing models of Russian and Soviet aircraft in 1:48 scale. It is neither an aircraft kit nor a part of one, but a collection of small pieces with which static dischargers are added to a finished model or one under construction. The exact number of pieces in the package and the material of the parts are not stated here, so it is better to check them before buying.

What static dischargers are for

In flight a static charge builds up on the airframe from friction with the air and from flying through precipitation. If it were not led away, it would interfere with the onboard radios and with the receivers of guidance systems. That is why thin rods are fitted to the trailing edges of the wings and tail surfaces and to the ends of the control surfaces, letting the charge bleed steadily into the surrounding air. On a model it is a detail that is inconspicuous at first glance but changes the overall impression markedly: the silhouette of the airplane gains fine whiskers that bring it immediately closer to the real subject in a photograph. Injected plastic parts tend to be too thick in this place, or they are missing from the kit altogether.

Fitting tips

The dischargers belong on the model right at the very end, after the finish, the decals and the patina, otherwise they would snap off during the rest of the work. Pre-drill the attachment point with a micro drill in a pin vise, run the hole square to the surface and choose the diameter to match the shank of the part. Glue in spots with super glue (cyanoacrylate) applied with the tip of a toothpick, never straight from the bottle. The parts are very small, so work over a light surface and with fine-tipped tweezers. Set the angle and the direction according to photographs of the real subject, as dischargers do not point at random. They are easiest to paint before fitting, with a dark shade sprayed onto the parts while they are still on the sprue or on double-sided tape.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of models of Russian and Soviet aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who are taking a model up to competition quality
  • Those who want to replace coarse or entirely missing parts from the kit
  • Anyone interested in working with small detail and micro drilling

The accessory is supplied unpainted. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a set of small accessories that are fitted to an aircraft model already built or under construction in 1:48 scale. The model itself is not included in the package.

As the last step, after the finish, the decals and the patina have been applied. Parts fitted earlier would snap off during further handling of the model.

The number of pieces and the material of the parts are not stated here. If you need a particular quantity for a given type of aircraft, check the contents before buying.

The procedure is simple, but it calls for patience, fine-tipped tweezers and a micro drill. The main risk is snapping a part, so it pays to pre-drill the hole and to glue in spots with super glue.
