A specialized detailing set that on a model of the Sukhoi Su-27 in 1:48 scale solves one of the most conspicuous and at the same time least reproducible assemblies — the protective grilles inside the air intake ducts. Injection-molded plastic cannot capture this structure finely enough in principle, because it is a mesh with very thin ribs and open passages. Photo-etched metal is the only solution here that looks credible even when seen close up. The manufacturer is the Ukrainian company Metallic Details, focused on accessories for aircraft models. The set is intended for the Academy kit.
The Su-27 is a Soviet twin-engine heavy fighter aircraft with markedly profiled rectangular air intakes under the wing-fuselage blend. The low-placed intakes are prone to ingesting foreign objects from the runway, and the ducts are therefore fitted with hinged protective grilles. On the real aircraft they are clearly visible and on a model it is a detail that everyone notices.
Assemble the intake ducts and clean up the seams before you set the grilles in — once it is glued together you can no longer get inside. Separate the parts with a scalpel, not with nippers. Make the bends slowly on a bending tool or between two blades. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied with a pin, as an excess of glue would flood the passages and the effect would disappear. Spray the inside of the duct and the grilles over a base color, the grilles ideally separately before setting them in.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. It is not a complete model — the base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
