Cut masks for painting a model of the carrier-borne aircraft Su-33 in 1:48 scale. The package holds only masks, no parts to be glued and no decals. The Su-33 is the carrier variant of a heavy twin-engine aircraft, told from the land-based version by folding wing panels, foreplanes and strengthened nose gear. The more complex transitions on the nose mean that masking takes more time than on simpler airframes.
A cut mask saves the most unpleasant part of the preparation — transferring a curved frame shape onto tape and cutting it out. In the end it comes down above all to the sharpness of the edge and to the left and the right side coming out the same. In 1:48 scale the frames are narrow, so even a small inaccuracy makes a visibly uneven frame width. The set is cut for the particular kit stated in the name — please check that you have exactly that one.
The basis is a clean and degreased surface. Lift the masks with tweezers with fine points and lay them on without stretching — a stretched mask shrinks after spraying and the edge shifts. On narrow frames it is better to lay all the pieces on dry first and check the overall arrangement, and only then press them down one by one. Spray square to the surface, not at an angle under the edge of a mask. If you are masking gear bays or nozzles as well, use classic tape and masking fluid on the open areas and keep the cut masks for the shaped detail.
