The Kawanishi N1K1-J Shiden, known to the Allies under the reporting name George, was a Japanese single-engine fighter of the end of the Second World War. It came about by converting a floatplane fighter into a land-based version, which showed in its structure: the wing was placed in the mid position and the aircraft therefore needed unusually long retractable landing gear legs. It was powered by an air-cooled radial engine, and the armament was concentrated in the wing. Type 11 designates the first production form of this version. The later reworked variant with a low-set wing and shorter landing gear removed that structural disadvantage.
The long landing gear legs are the most delicate place on this type — let the parts cure thoroughly and rest the model on a support during further work, not on its wheels. Finish the cockpit and the engine before closing the fuselage; on a radial engine it is enough to bring the cylinders out with a dry brush, because only part of it is visible through the cowling. A finish from an animated subject tends to be cleaner and more colorful than on historic machines, so heavy weathering does not belong here — a fine wash into the engraved lines and a discreet emphasis of the edges is enough. Apply gloss clear before the decals and, once it has dried, unify the surface with matte or semi-gloss clear to your own taste.
