The star with bars at the sides in the form introduced in 1943, on a sheet in nine sizes and in the scale for 1:48 models.

The summer of 1943 brought the most striking change of national marking of the whole war to American aircraft. Horizontal bars were added to the star in a disc on both sides and the whole device was given a single-color border. The aim was to enlarge the silhouette of the insignia and to make it a shape that can be recognized far faster in flight than a disc on its own. It was precisely this form that machines carried at the moment when the American effort reached its peak.
A modeler will manage with it on the vast majority of the famous machines of the close of the war: the fighters escorting the daylight raids over the continent, the carrier aircraft from the fighting for the Pacific islands and the heavy bombers. The insignia stayed in force after the capitulation as well and accompanied aircraft in the occupation garrisons.
The print offers nine size steps between twenty and sixty inches of real size. A modeler chooses according to where the insignia belongs, because the fuselage marking tended to be smaller than the one on the lower wing surface.
For a few weeks between the introduction of the bars and the settling of the final form there was an intermediate variant with a border of a different color. That one is not on this sheet, because the manufacturer handles it with a separate item.
An elongated shape is harder to apply than a disc, because it is easily settled askew. It helps to mark the longitudinal axis of the marking with a pencil and to line the film up with it before it takes hold. A small turn then cannot be put right without damaging the print.
