A photo-etched detail set from Aber for the American M10 tank destroyer in 1:48 scale – the basic set vol. 1. The metal parts refine the model; on its own it is not a kit.

A photo-etched detail set from the Polish maker Aber in 1:48 scale, listed as the basic set vol. 1 for the American M10 tank destroyer. It is not a model of the vehicle but an accessory to a plastic kit, which you have to own separately. Basic sets of this kind tend to be the most extensive in the whole range and deal with the most visible thin-walled fittings of the vehicle — the ones that injection-molded plastic cannot manage at a matching thickness for technical reasons.
The M10 was an American tank destroyer built on the chassis of the M4 Sherman medium tank. It carried a 76.2 mm gun in an open turret with a five-sided plan, which gave the crew a good field of view and quick handling but left them vulnerable to splinters and to fire from above. It went into action from the fighting in Italy through Normandy to the end of the war, and it also served with the British army, which rearmed some of the vehicles with the 17-pounder gun. An open turret means that the interior and its inner walls are visible on a model.
Separate the parts with a scalpel on a hard mat and work with tweezers. Run the bends in a photo-etch bending tool or between two razor blades. Glue them with cyanoacrylate glue in the smallest possible amount. On the M10 the detailing pays off most inside the open turret and on the external stowage of tools and gear — everything is visible there. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with a primer for metal; then add a wash into the gaps of the olive shade and dusty pigments on the running gear.
This is a detail accessory, not a standalone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
