About product

1:48 Yak-130 BASIC kabuki masks - a New Ware masking set

A set of pre-cut masks made from kabuki tape, the fine Japanese paper tape that follows curves well and leaves no adhesive behind when removed. The masks are cut to the shape of the particular frames and surfaces of the Yak-130 model in 1:48 scale, so the tedious cutting of tape by eye and measuring against engraved lines falls away. It is not a model or a part of one, but an aid that decides how cleanly the painted model will look. The BASIC level is the basic range at New Ware; for the same aircraft the manufacturer also offers broader sets designated ADVANCED and EXPERT.

The real subject

The Yak-130 is a two-seat jet aircraft intended for the advanced training of combat pilots and, in armed form, for light attack tasks as well. It has tandem cockpits one behind the other, extensively glazed canopy and a raised rear seat for the instructor. It is precisely the divided and broken-up canopy that makes masking the glazing considerably more laborious on this type than on a single-seat aircraft, and cutting tape by hand here tends to be a source of uneven edges.

Usage tips

Apply the masks only to a perfectly cured and degreased surface. Wash the clear parts first in warm water with detergent and let them dry so that the mask holds. Lift each mask off the backing sheet with the tip of a scalpel or with tweezers, seat it dry and only then press it down with a wooden toothpick all around the edge; most bleed comes from an edge that has not been pressed down. It is a good idea to spray the frames with the cockpit color first and only then with the top coat, so that bare plastic does not show through from the inside. Apply the paint in thin coats and remove the masks while the finish has only just dried, not after several days.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the Yak-130 in 1:48 scale who want sharp paint transitions.
  • Those who do not want to spend hours cutting tape for a broken-up canopy.
  • Beginners for whom masking glazing is the biggest obstacle.
  • Builders who finish a model with an airbrush and need a repeatable result.

This is a masking accessory, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a set of masks used when painting a model that is already built. The model itself has to be obtained separately.

New Ware grades the scope of its sets: BASIC is the basic level, ADVANCED and EXPERT are broader. The exact contents of a particular set are stated on its packaging.

The masks are cut to the outlines of a particular kit, which is stated on the packaging of the set. Please check before ordering that you have the matching kit, because on a different model the shapes need not fit.

Remove them as soon as possible after the paint has dried. The longer the tape lies on the finish, the greater the risk that it will lift the edge of the coat.
