About product

Yak-2, Yak-4 and Yak-6 in 1:48 scale — AML decals

This product is a sheet of decals, that is, markings for finishing a model you have already built. It is not a kit. The Czech manufacturer AML issued it for the twin-engine Soviet machines of the Yakovlev design bureau in 1:48 scale — the Yak-2, Yak-4 and Yak-6 types. These are subjects that are only rarely available as kits, so a decal sheet is a valuable accessory for their builders in widening the choice of markings.

The real subject

The Yak-2 and Yak-4 were Soviet twin-engine light bomber and reconnaissance aircraft of the turn of the 1930s and 1940s, derived from a fast single-purpose prototype. They were marked by an aerodynamically clean airframe and mixed construction, but their series production remained small and more modern types quickly replaced them in service. The Yak-6, by contrast, was a light twin-engine liaison and transport aircraft of wooden construction with a pair of M-11 radial engines, used for courier, training and supply tasks. All three types are among the less well-known and all the more interesting chapters of Soviet aviation.

Tips for applying the decals

Before applying them, check that the finish is perfectly cured and smooth. Cut the sheet into the individual designs and dip them one after another in lukewarm water; as soon as the carrier film starts to release, take the decal out and let it rest for a few seconds on a paper pad. Soviet stars and tactical numbers are often placed over the rounded surfaces of the fuselage and over the covers of the engine nacelles — that is exactly where a softener helps, so that the film follows the shape. Draw off the surplus water with a cloth from the center to the edges, so that no air is left under the decal. Seal the finished markings with varnish and only then weather them.

Who the sheet is for

  • Modelers interested in less common Soviet aircraft
  • Builders of Yak-2, Yak-4 and Yak-6 models in 1:48 scale
  • Those who want to set a model apart from the standard markings in the box
  • Collectors of decal sheets on Soviet aviation themes

This is a decal sheet, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is only a sheet of decals for 1:48 scale; the kit itself has to be obtained separately.

According to the name it covers the twin-engine Yak-2, Yak-4 and Yak-6 machines. The division of the designs between the individual types is given on the packaging of the product.

Apply it to a gloss finish, push the water and air out from under the film and use a softener once it is dry. Finally seal the decal with another coat of varnish.

In size they are tied to 1:48 scale. The fit on a particular kit is not stated here, as the fuselage shapes of unusual types differ between manufacturers.
