About product

HMS Cornwall in 1:700 scale (Trumpeter)

An injection-molded plastic kit of a ship model from the maker Trumpeter. The 1:700 scale is the most widespread collector's standard for ships, so a finished cruiser goes well with other models of the same scale in a shared display case and does not take up much room while doing so. Whether the hull is divided into a full-hull variant and a waterline version is stated on the box.

The real subject

HMS Cornwall was a Royal Navy heavy cruiser of interwar design, that is a type of ship built as a fast unit with great range, a strong main gun armament and only limited armor. Its characteristic silhouette is formed by a high freeboard, three funnels and the main-caliber turrets distributed both forward and aft. In the course of their service ships of this generation went through modifications of armament and superstructure, so check on the box the particular state the kit captures.

Building and painting tips

With ships in 1:700 the cleanness of the work decides more than the number of parts. Glue the hull and sand the joint carefully at the keel and at the bow, because it will give itself away on a smooth surface. Paint the deck separately from the sides and only then complete the superstructures, otherwise masking is very difficult. Glue the superstructures and masts with thin plastic cement in small steps and let them cure, as small parts are easily knocked out of line. The model is markedly lifted by adding photo-etched railings and ladders. For color, go for gray shades, pick out the surfaces with a dry brush along the edges and let a wash run to the feet of the superstructures and into the deck recesses. Finally seat the model on a stand or on a water base.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of ship models in the uniform 1:700 scale.
  • Modelers with an interest in the British war fleet.
  • Builders who want to complete a model with photo-etched parts.
  • Anyone interested in a striking model that takes up little room in a display case.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The standard of the hull is stated on the box. A number of ship kits in 1:700 offer both variants, so before building, look at which of them you have.

The contents of the package are stated on the box. Railings, ladders and radar antennas are commonly bought separately for ships in 1:700.

The dimensions of the finished model are stated on the box. The 1:700 scale is among the space-saving ones, so the model takes up considerably less room than the same ship in 1:350.

Even a less experienced modeler will manage the basic assembly of the hull and superstructures, but small parts in this scale call for patience, tweezers and thin cement.
