HMS Illustrious was the first ship of the aircraft carrier class of the same name of the Royal Navy and entered service in 1940. In design terms she was set apart by an armored flight deck and an armored hangar — a solution that raised the resistance of the hull but reduced the space for aircraft compared with the American and Japanese carriers of the same period. In 1940 the ship operated in the Mediterranean and carried the propeller-driven carrier aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm of the time. The 1940 state is interesting for a modeler in that it corresponds to the early service of the ship before her later refits.
Ship models in 1:700 stand on patience: the parts are small, and sharp cutters, tweezers and thin cement for plastic applied with a fine brush pay off. Glue the photo-etched elements with superglue, not with cement for plastic. Spray the hull and the decks with primer, apply the paint with an airbrush in thin coats and mask the edges exactly — large surfaces in this scale reveal every overspray. It is a good idea to finish the flight deck before fitting the superstructures. The model comes out well on a simple base or on an imitation of a water surface.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
