About product

HMS Kent (F78) in 1:700 scale from Trumpeter

An injection molded plastic kit of a Royal Navy Type 23 frigate, specifically of the ship HMS Kent with the hull designation F78. The 1:700 scale is the most widespread collectors' standard for modern surface ships, so the model fits well into a display case beside other warships. Trumpeter is a Chinese manufacturer known for a wide range of ship kits in precisely this scale.

The real subject

The Type 23 frigates, also designated the Duke class, came about for the Royal Navy as vessels specialized in anti-submarine warfare. They began entering service at the beginning of the 1990s and replaced older frigate classes. The design puts the emphasis on low self-noise, so that a ship can work effectively with a towed array sonar, and on good sea-keeping qualities in the north Atlantic. The armament consists of a 114 mm gun, an anti-aircraft missile system, anti-ship missiles, torpedo tubes and an embarked helicopter with a hangar at the stern. HMS Kent is one of the later units of this series.

Building and painting tips

A small scale forgives faults in the cleanliness of the work less than large kits do. Rather cut the parts off the sprues with a fine etched file or a sharp knife and fill the joints sanded down to nothing. It is advisable to spray the hull with a filler primer before painting, which evens out the surface and reveals grooves. The gray finish of modern British ships stands out when, once it is dry, you bring it out lightly with a dark wash into the panel lines and suggest the edges of the superstructures with a dry brush. Railings, radars and fine antennas in plastic may look coarse, so they are often replaced with photo-etched parts. Lay the decals onto a gloss base and fix them with a matte coat.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of modern Royal Navy vessels in the uniform 1:700 scale
  • Modelers who want to complete the kit with photo-etched sets and fine rigging
  • Anyone interested in anti-submarine frigates and the navy of the turn of the millennium
  • More advanced beginners who already manage work with small parts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a kit in injection molded plastic. The parts have to be taken out of the sprues, glued and painted, and neither glue nor paints are included in the package.

The number of parts and the contents of the package are stated on the packaging of the kit. Please check the extent against the contents of the package.

For injection molded plastic a thin modeling cement applied by capillary action with a brush suits. Glue the clear parts with glue for glazing, so that they do not dull.

Yes. In 1:700 scale, photo-etched railings, ladders and radar antennas are commonly added to modern frigates, as plastic cannot render them faithfully at this scale.
