About product

Wooden deck for the battleship Mikasa 1:700 (Hasegawa)

This is not a kit of the ship but an accessory for a model that has already been built or is under construction. The panel of thin wood veneer is stuck onto the plastic deck and gives it a convincing texture and wood grain that paint alone can hardly imitate on smooth plastic. The veneer is pre-stained and treated with a protective coating against moisture, and it already has an adhesive layer applied on the back, so no glue is applied separately. The thickness of the panel is 0.21 mm, the sheet also holds carefully worked out edge borders and the lines of the deck structures, and it is supplemented by a small chain.

The real subject

The Mikasa was a Japanese pre-dreadnought battleship built in Britain and brought into service at the beginning of the 20th century. She went down in history as the flagship of Admiral Togo Heihachiro at the Battle of Tsushima in May 1905, which decided the naval part of the Russo-Japanese War. Unlike most of her contemporaries the ship has survived to this day and is displayed as a museum vessel in Yokosuka, so for modelers there is also readily available photographic documentation.

Usage tips

Before gluing, rid the plastic deck of grease and dust and leave it perfectly dry and flat. Take the individual segments out carefully with a sharp scalpel or pointed tweezers, try the fit dry and only then peel the backing film off the adhesive layer. The veneer forgives only a minimum of shifting, so work from one edge and press down gradually, so that no bubbles are left under the panel. It is more practical to fit the superstructures and the guns only after the deck has been stuck on. Painting the wood is not necessary; any evening out of the tone should be done only with a very thinned glaze or a weak wash, as a heavy coat would cover the grain. A matte varnish in a thin coat unifies and protects the surface.

Who the deck is for

  • builders of ships in 1:700 scale who are not happy with a plastic imitation of a planked deck
  • modelers who want to take a model of the Mikasa beyond a box build
  • collectors of historic vessels and exhibitors at competitions
  • less experienced modelers too, because sticking on self-adhesive veneer is easier than photo-etched accessories

It is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The model of the ship itself, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a separate accessory, that is a wooden deck intended to be stuck onto a model of the battleship Mikasa in 1:700 scale. The model, glue and paints are not supplied.

No. The panel has an adhesive layer applied at the factory; all you have to do is peel off the backing film and press the part onto a cleaned and degreased surface.

It does not. The veneer is stained and treated against moisture. The tone can be evened out gently with a very thinned wash, but a heavy coat of paint would cover the wood grain.

Yes, it is one of the easier accessories. The important thing is to try the fit dry and to glue gradually from one edge, so that no air is left under the veneer.
