This kit from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi captures the heavy cruiser Maya in 1:700 scale. The TOKU Easy line offers a simplified design with fewer parts — the build is brisk and straightforward, yet the model keeps the characteristic massive silhouette of the Takao-class cruisers with their castle-like superstructure.
Maya belonged to the four heavy cruisers of the Takao class, completed at the start of the 1930s — heavily armed ships with 203 mm guns. After heavy damage in an air raid on Rabaul, Maya was rebuilt in 1943 and 1944 into an anti-aircraft cruiser: she lost one gun turret and gained numerous anti-aircraft armament. Her service ended on 23 October 1944, when an American submarine sank her on the way to Leyte.
Start with the hull and the decks, complete the superstructure on its own and fit it only once painted. The basis is Imperial Japanese Navy gray, brought to life by a wash in the engraved detail and light drybrushing on the edges. The rich anti-aircraft armament of the late configuration takes careful brush differentiation — and it is precisely that which makes Maya an interesting subject.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
