An injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese cruiser Mogami in 1:700 scale from Tamiya, part of the Waterline series. The model captures the ship in her later form, when she had been rebuilt into a cruiser carrying a larger number of floatplanes. The compact superstructure and the characteristic shape of the funnel are rendered in fine detail; the turrets rotate thanks to polyethylene caps.
The Mogami was the lead ship of the class of the same name of Japanese cruisers, completed in the middle of the 1930s as a capable unit with a numerous gun armament. After battle damage the rear part of the ship was rebuilt into a deck for floatplanes, and the Mogami thus served as a so-called aircraft cruiser that combined gun power with reconnaissance aircraft. In this form she fought until she was sunk in the autumn of 1944.
It is a waterline model built down to the waterline and meant for a flat surface. Use liquid cement for plastic and work in subassemblies. Apply a primer before painting and put the paints on with an airbrush; paint the small armament, the floatplanes and the catapults while they are still on the sprue. Light naval weathering and optional photo-etched railings will liven up the whole.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
