The light cruiser Konigsberg in 1:700 scale. The ship became known as one of the first large victims of air attack at sea.

This light cruiser gave her name to a whole trio of vessels that also included Karlsruhe and Koln. The most striking feature was the arrangement of the gun turrets: while the forward one stood on the centerline, the two after turrets were offset to either side so that they would not get in each other's way when firing. The result was an asymmetrical silhouette that cannot be mistaken for another type on a model.
In the 1930s the ship served mainly to train cadets and patrolled off the Spanish coast during the civil war there. April 1940 and the landings in Norway proved fatal to her. Off Bergen she was hit by the fire of a Norwegian coastal battery, and the following day British carrier-borne Blackburn Skua bombers sank her. The wreck was not raised until during the war and was broken up at the end of the 1940s. The model represents the vessel in her clean interwar form, without the later field modifications.
It is a good idea to dry-fit the offset after turrets and check that they sit correctly as mirror images; a hasty assembly easily swaps them. Interwar German ships carried a lighter gray than vessels of later years, which is worth taking into account when mixing the shade. The deck areas will come alive with gentle emphasis on the hatches and darkened shadows around the superstructures. In 1:700 the masts and topmasts are among the most fragile parts, so it is sensible to glue them on only after the hull is finished. And because the whole beauty of this ship lies in the view from above, she should be placed rather low in a display case, so that the offset turrets can be seen.
