A set of photo-etched parts made of thin metal sheet, intended for detailing a model of the Japanese battleship Musashi in 1:700 scale. A plate with the name of the ship is included as well and can be used when mounting the model on a base. It is an accessory, not a standalone model: the basic kit has to be obtained separately.
Photo-etched parts replace parts that cannot be injection-molded in plastic at a corresponding thickness in a 1:700 reduction. Typically these are railings, ladders, platforms, cranes, gratings and antennas: in plastic they come out too thick, whereas etched sheet can express a thin structure convincingly. It is precisely these items that have the greatest influence on the final impression of large surface ships, because the outline of the superstructures is formed predominantly by them when seen from a distance.
Nip the parts from the fret on a hard surface, ideally with a scalpel or with photo-etch shears, and sand the remaining tab down. Make the folds over a straight edge or in a bending tool, so that they are sharp and in one plane. They are glued with super glue applied in a minimal amount; an excess runs and ruins the detail around it. It proves worthwhile to spray the photo-etched parts with primer while they are still on the fret, because bare metal holds paint badly. Check the set against the particular kit you are building: photo-etched parts tend to be cut for a certain release and may not fit another box.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
