A set of turned metal barrels in 1:700 scale meant to replace the plastic parts of the medium gun battery of 150 mm caliber. The package holds twelve barrels. It is not a kit of a ship but a detail accessory that can raise the believability of a finished model markedly. Aber is a Polish maker specializing in etched and turned modeling parts.
On German heavy units of the Second World War the 150 mm caliber made up the medium armament. The battleships Bismarck and Tirpitz and the battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau all carried these guns in twin turrets arranged along the sides of the hull; they served against lighter surface targets and backed up the main battery. In 1:700 scale a plastic barrel of such a caliber is very thin, it tends to be marked by the mold parting line and it has no open muzzle — which is exactly why a metal replacement pays off most on these models.
Cut the original plastic barrel off as close to the turret as possible and level the surface. Carefully drill a hole in the remainder of the part to match the pin on the metal barrel; drill slowly, ideally with a hand micro drill, so that the plastic does not melt. Seat the barrel dry, check that it is on the axis and at the right elevation, and only then fix it with a drop of cyanoacrylate glue. Degrease the brass with alcohol before painting and go over it with a primer for metal, otherwise the paint holds badly. Check the muzzle after spraying so that it stays sharp and open.
This is an accessory set, not a model of a ship. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
