About product

1:700 SMS Derfflinger and SMS Lützow 1916 with a Q-class airship — a Takom set

A combined package in the naval scale 1:700 holding two ships of the Derfflinger class in their 1916 guise and, with them, an airship of the Q class. It is a combined offering: both ships are also made as separate items, and this set joins them in one package and adds the airship, which makes it an interesting basis for a scene joining the surface with aerial reconnaissance. The models are supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The Derfflinger and the Lützow were German battlecruisers of the same class, that is, large fast ships with main-caliber artillery arranged in twin turrets on the center line of the ship. Both took part in the naval battle of Jutland at the turn of May and June 1916, the largest clash of surface forces of World War I. The Lützow was heavily damaged in its course and did not complete the voyage, while the Derfflinger came through the battle and its fate was sealed after the end of the war. Airships of the Q class were among the types the Imperial German Navy used for long-range reconnaissance over the North Sea; they were rigid structures with a load-bearing framework and gas cells, whose range markedly exceeded the possibilities of the aircraft of the day.

Building and painting tips

In 1:700 scale the cleanness of the surface decides: fill and sand the joints of the hull and the superstructures, because at this scale every step stands out. Start the painting with a primer, then the overall shade of the hull and the superstructures, and deal with the decks separately. Fine details such as railings, ladders or booms are usually added at this scale with photo-etching — if you use it, reckon on working with tweezers and cyanoacrylate glue. The airship has an entirely different surface from the ships; a matte, slightly uneven coat with no sharp weathering looks best. For display, a stand or a surface imitating the water comes in handy; before choosing, consider whether you want to finish the ships with the full hull or only down to the waterline.
