A model of the large cruiser USS Alaska in 1:700 scale, representing the ship as she was in 1945, when she screened American task forces operating off the Japanese coast.
Responsibility details are not available.
Alaska carried the hull designation CB-1 and filled the gap in the US Navy between the heavy cruiser and the battleship. Of the six units planned, only two entered service, a third was left incomplete and the remaining three were never begun. The silhouette with its long slender hull and three triple turrets is therefore among the rarer subjects that can be built in 1:700 scale.
The year 1945 meant service far from home waters. The ship screened the fast carrier task forces during night strikes against Tokyo, escorted them during the capture of Iwo Jima and later off Okinawa as well. It was precisely the combination of high speed with dense antiaircraft armament that was decisive for this role. After the Japanese surrender she anchored at Boston, in February 1947 the navy took her out of active service, and after years in the reserve fleet she ended up scrapped in 1961.
What does most is a base with a suggested water surface: the narrow hull then looks exactly as long as it did in reality. Before gluing it is worth dry-fitting all the mating surfaces and only then applying the glue, because in this class the superstructures form several levels one above another. The tiny barrels of the antiaircraft weapons will take only a thin coat of paint, otherwise they lose their shape. Escorting destroyers in the same scale make a fitting addition to a collection; only beside them does it become clear how massive a ship she was.
