The sheet from ETA diorama carries designs of old maps and, according to the name, is prepared for use in several scales — 1:72, 1:35 and 1:24. The sheet is therefore not tied to a single scale: the designs are printed so that the modeler can choose the size that matches the scene. It is not a kit and not a waterslide decal but printed paper to trim and glue down yourself.
A map is one of the few accessories that tells a story on its own. Spread out on the table of a command post, on the hood of a vehicle, on a crate or held by a figure, it explains at once what is happening in the scene. It also works pinned to a wall, rolled up in a tube, or folded several times and tucked into a belt. In 1:24 scale you can work with larger formats and more legible detail; in 1:72, choose small designs instead — an oversized map is the commonest mistake in a small scale.
Real maps were folded, so the best effect comes from suggesting the creases: fold the paper dry over a blunt edge into a regular grid and then flatten it again — a trace will stay where the folds were. You can tear the edges lightly instead of trimming them, which looks more convincing than a clean cut. Glue in spots with PVA or matte glue so that the map can stay slightly wavy and does not cling to the base over its whole area. For aging, use a weak wash in ocher or brown along the edges and in the creases, perhaps a hint of a coffee tone; matte varnish at the end. A map held or spread open keeps its shape better if you back it from the inside with thin foil or adhesive tape.
This is a printed paper accessory for a diorama. Glue, paints, a model and figures are not included in the package.
