About product

Vacuum-formed canopy for the Supermarine Attacker F.1/FB.2 in 1:72 scale (Mark I)

A vacuum-formed clear canopy for a model of the Attacker in the F.1 and FB.2 versions, 1:72 scale, from Mark I. The thin-walled molding in clear film replaces the stock injection-molded part and deals with two of its typical weaknesses — the thickness of the wall and optical distortion. How many pieces the package holds is stated on the box.

The real subject

The Supermarine Attacker was the first jet type brought into regular service with the carrier squadrons of the Fleet Air Arm. In design it followed on from the piston era: its landing gear kept a tailwheel, which made it an unusual-looking machine on the deck of an aircraft carrier. The F.1 version was a pure fighter, while the FB.2 was a fighter and ground attack adaptation able to carry stores. It lasted only a few years in service and was soon replaced by more modern types.

Usage tips

On no account trim the molding with a knife close to the part — the thin wall will crack. Cut it from the backing with a margin and then sand the surplus rim down on abrasive paper laid on a flat board, with a circular motion and without pressure, until you reach the parting line exactly, that is the edge where the formed surface passes into the flat backing. Work a little at a time and keep trying the fit dry; you can always take more off, but not put it back. Glue with a glue that dries clear — neither cyanoacrylate nor thin cement for plastic suits clear parts, because they fog the surface and the fumes leave a white veil. Before gluing it pays to polish the canopy with the finest abrasive and go over it with a gloss varnish; the framing is easiest to mask with narrow strips of tape and spray separately.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of British carrier-borne aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want to display the cockpit open
  • Those bothered by a thick and imperfectly clear stock canopy
  • Modelers willing to work with vacuum-formed parts

This is an accessory for a model, not a kit in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. The package holds only the clear replacement canopy; you need to have your own kit.

Cut it out with a margin and sand the rim down on abrasive paper laid on a flat board, right to the parting line. No cutting with a knife at the part.

A glue that dries clear. Neither cyanoacrylate nor thin cement for plastic suits, as they would fog the surface.

According to the name the set is intended for both versions together. Even so, compare the shape of the canopy with your own model.
