About product

Photo-etched landing flaps for the Bristol Beaufort Mk.I in 1:72 scale

The set addresses one particular problem of a small scale: the landing flaps. On the real aircraft these are a thin structure with ribbing and perforation that injection-molded plastic in 1:72 scale cannot express other than as a solid part, far too thick in scale. Photo-etched metal makes it possible to produce a flap a few tenths of a millimeter thick, pressings and openings included, so that it looks convincing even from close up. The package holds only metal parts; the aircraft model is not part of it. The manufacturer is Eduard, a Czech brand from Obrnice near Most.

The real subject

The Bristol Beaufort Mk.I was a British twin-engine torpedo bomber with Bristol Taurus radial engines, created at the end of the 1930s out of the experience with the Blenheim light bomber. It carried a crew of four and was designed above all for attacks on shipping, for which the internal space was adapted to take a torpedo. Machines of this type were also built in Australia. For a modeler it is interesting for its massive fuselage, glazed nose and dorsal turret.

Building and painting tips

Fitting photo-etched flaps assumes cutting into the model: the plastic flaps, usually molded in one piece with the wing, have to be cut off with a thin saw or opened up with a mini drill and the opening leveled. Work slowly and test-fit dry as you go. Assemble the flap itself completely off the model and only then glue it in, as in a narrow cutout it is already hard to handle. Make the folds along the etched groove in a bending tool. Lowered flaps change the look of the model markedly, so consider whether they suit the scene you have chosen: on a parked aircraft they were usually raised or only partly lowered. Do the painting in stages, while the flap and its bay are still accessible, as once they are glued an airbrush will not reach inside. Before spraying, degrease the sheet and use a primer for metal.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the Beaufort Mk.I in 1:72 scale
  • Those who want a model with the landing flaps lowered
  • More experienced builders who are not afraid to cut into a wing
  • Anyone interested in maximum detail in a small scale

The set is an accessory to a plastic kit. The model itself, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. The set holds only the photo-etched metal parts of the flaps. The Beaufort Mk.I plastic kit in 1:72 scale has to be obtained separately.

As a rule yes. The plastic flaps tend to be molded in one piece with the wing, so they have to be cut off and the opening adjusted. It is a job for a more experienced modeler.

It depends on the scene. An aircraft standing on the ground for a longer time usually had its flaps raised; lowered flaps suit the depiction of a landing configuration or the showing off of detail in a display case.

Before they are glued into the wing. Once they are in place the inside of the flap bay is practically unreachable for an airbrush.
